One of the seminal textbooks in Periodontology. I spent a bit of time contemplating digital vs hardcover and was mainly worried about how pictures and things would look (as the sample gives little detail). In the end the price difference including shipping tipped the balance in favour of digital and I’m so pleased I did. The pictures are fantastic – its exactly the same as the printed version. Its very easy to navigate the book. It covers all of the important topics. And its great to have it on all my devices for quick referencing. You can’t copy and paste details but I guess you can’t do that with the printed copy either.

Fast shipping & good product, totally satisfied.

excellent book the bible for periodontist !!!!

This text was required for the Century College Dental Assisting program. Thankfully, they keep the same 2 books the entire 2 years of the program. However, both Modern Dental Assisting and this book (we call it Delmar) have basically the same information. MDA is easier to read, has more step-by-step procedures detailed out with photos and is the primary choice for all of the subjects we cover. This text does a better job of detailing the contents of dental cements, but in the end it is more important we know how to mix these cements then know all the ingredients they contain. I sincerely wish the professors could get permission to take what few chapters they feel Delmar does a better job of covering, put them in a binder and let us use that instead of each of us purchIDg this book that we mostly ignore. If I did not know about MDA, this book would be fine but since I do know about Modern Dental Assisting, this book is just collecting dust.

Very good book, has pretty much everything in it I needed. I have been a DA already however had been out of it a while when my son past away. I felt I needed to be refreshed before going back and this helped me a lot.

Good condition

Bergey’s Manual of Determinative Bacteriology. Eighth Edition – October 1, 1974 PDF

Bergey’s Manual of Determinative Bacteriology. Eighth Edition Hardcover – October 1, 1974
Author: R. E. Buchanan ID: 0683011170

Hardcover: 1272 pagesPublisher: Williams & Wilkins; 8th edition (October 1, 1974)Language: EnglishISBN-10: 0683011170ISBN-13: 978-0683011173 Product Dimensions: 10.1 x 7.1 x 2 inches Shipping Weight: 4.4 pounds Best Sellers Rank: #2,257,722 in Books (See Top 100 in Books) #102 in Books > Medical Books > Basic Sciences > Bacteriology #11005 in Books > Science & Math > Agricultural Sciences #50289 in Books > Science & Math > Biological Sciences

The book is big and heavy and is filled with useful information for the world of microorganisms. All microbiology majors must have this book in their libraries. This book helps you identify, compare, and understand microorganisms better. Every organism is descibed in detail: gram-stain reactions, fermentation reaction, morphology, etc.

This "Bergey’s Manual of Determinative Bacteriology" has an admirable practical approach. It depicted the characteristics of bacterial groups in a straightforward manner. Using a wide focus, it featured vivid illustrations, which will enable you to reason like a professional. The manual provided a good number of easy-to-master materials.
However, I felt that this 9th Edition, which first appeared in 1994, is just too old. The authors should give us a more recent update. Also, the high retail price of this book ensured that many people would go for a better alternative. There are lots of them out there! The choice is yours.

This book got me through Microbiology lab–easy to understand, and thorough. Everything you could want to know about a bacterium or a species is detailed here for you! I’m not selling this one back! Get this if you don’t want to be writing reports in the middle of the night, going "oh, shoot, I didn’t look up this or that bit of information in my professor’s copy!"

worth it’s weight in gold!

While in my first year of medical school, I have gone to the library and tried out the most popular physiology books. Guyton and Hall and Berne and Levy left much to be desired. The Lange Review is more of a review and simply doesn’t teach things. There were concepts that I just didn’t understand in these books that the authors assume a medical student should have as pre-req knowledge.

An example is a concept that relies a lot on physics (NOT one of my strengths!) Surfactant and surface tension. When I opened up Boron, it explained in detail with FOUR pictures… and A-ha! I understood in 5 minutes what had taken ages of confusion in Berne and Levy.

So, if you learn visually, need pictures and would like a bit more explanation and teaching in your physiology book, Boron is the textbook for you!

Yes, it does go deep into detail that is beyond what I will need during first year… but I just skim over those areas and focus on the parts that are most critical. It is so well-written that it is truly a joy to read! The authors are excellent teachers and have made many complicated subjects understandable.

A hint to Beginners: As I am a beginner in physiology, I MUST start a body system by reading the introduction chapter. For example, I read the intro to cardiovascular system before jumping into how the heart pumping mechanism works… But as long as I read the intro chapter and have a decent grasp on the organs involved, I can hop right into the physiology on my next read.

Medical Physiology inspires me to keep reading and keep learning. There are clinical examples, good referencing to topics previously discussed, and an extra plus, I can download ALL the diagrams and text from the studentconsult website!
Like many first-year medical students, I’ve done a lot of research into figuring out which books to buy for specific subjects. Most of the time, class notes can be simply supplemented with a well-written USMLE-style review book. However, some very broad and important subjects (such as physiology) need much more than that… you NEED a good grounding in physiology to succeed as a physician or other medical professional.

That being said, I had already purchased a couple physiology books: Costanzo (4th edition) for class and BRS Physiology (also written by Costanzo) to review for the boards next year. However, as the class lectures went on, I found myself realizing how much isn’t covered in these books – and with good reason; many class details simply aren’t "high yield" material. However, if you really want to learn more about the "how and why" to build a better foundation, you need to buy a comprehensive physiology textbook as a reference.

I narrowed it down to three books, all of which I think are very good for medical students and professionals: Berne and Levy, Guyton and Hall, and Boron and Boulpaep. I was able to borrow a friend’s Guyton and Hall… and while I think it’s an amazing feat that Guyton himself completely wrote the first few editions of the book, it was clear that some sections were more fluid than others (cardiovascular was very strong). In addition, it felt more like a dictation than a textbook: tons of details and snippets of information, but the text seemed more dry and figures weren’t nearly as clear, plentiful, or colorful. I also took a short look at Berne and Levy: a great book with lots of details as well…
